If you a majority of your day is spent looking at a computer screen then you need to know the affects that could have on your vision.

Some eye issues that come from too much “screen time” are dry eyes, red eyes, headaches and eye strain. Most people have stiff necks as well due to the posture taken while sitting at a computer.

Here are some ways to get relief:

Monitor adjustment: Make sure your monitor has a high resolution. The higher the resolution, the easier it is on your eyes. Also, keep the monitor directly in front of you. Turning your head to face your computer will cause neck stiffness and headaches.

Lighting: Use adequate lighting to reduce the glare of the screen. However, make sure that there is not a glare on the screen from the lighting. This will increase eye strain as you may be tempted to squint to see past the glare.

20/20/20 rule: Take frequent breaks. Doctors say that for every 20 minutes you stare at the screen you should take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away.

Glasses: Get computer friendly glasses. Talk to your doctor about getting a pair of glasses to use just with computer viewing. Sometimes your normal glasses are meant for seeing far away or up close; the computer screen is somewhere in between. This may be solved with a special pair of glasses for just computer viewing.

If you are having any vision issues, be sure to make an appointment with your local optometrist for a comprehensive eye exam. And talk to your doctor about problems you are having with your screen viewing.
